The Work That Reconnects by Joanna Macy already mentions in its title what it’s all about: reconnection. In this case, it’s about reconnecting to the more-than-human world (and that includes the “wild” part within ourselves). While so many of us are disconnected from the world around us, we still feel the pain of destruction, of loss of diversity and aliveness.
Within the practice of “coming from gratitude”, one of the practices is a Mirror Walk where people are invited to see everything they encounter as a mirror of themselves. What a way to see our interconnectedness with everything around us! It’s a direct sensing into that connection, no words needed, just loving attention.
Another practices are related to grief and anger or emptiness. Using the language of this book, we could call those acknowledgments of emotional impact. And as we’ve seen, acknowledgements are the silent stars of context healing.
Other practices in the bundle are about pushing people to hold a bigger frame than usual to include the broader context our group or organization finds itself in.
One is the Council of All Beings, where each person takes on the voice of a non-human being – tree, river, animal, mountain – and speaks on their behalf to the human circle. It’s akin to a constellation practice of a particular scope: humans in context.
The other is the Seventh Generation Ritual where people speak as if they are members of a council seven generations in the future. It’s a way to zoom out very far and ask about the coherence of our current action with the impact on the seven-generation frame.
